In November 2022, my world was turned upside down when we received devastating news: my son had a highly suspicious tumor that required immediate surgery. On December 8, 2022—his not-so-sweet 16th birthday—we learned that the tumor was cancer. No words can describe the fear and heartbreak a mother feels hearing those words.

When we finally came home from the hospital, I was overwhelmed with emotion. Our small community in Illinois had sent hundreds of birthday cards to lift my son’s spirits, but what truly brought tears to my eyes was what we found waiting in our yard—a beautiful, heartfelt “Happy Sweet 16th Birthday” yard card. In a moment when joy felt impossible, that sign brought light, hope, and comfort to our family.

That experience changed everything for me. It made me realize how deeply I wanted to spend more time with my family. As a nurse and a single mother at the time, working 12-hour shifts was all I knew in order to make ends meet. Thankfully, God blessed me with a hardworking man who made it possible for me to slow down and pursue something meaningful.

Anyone who knows me knows that I go all out when it comes to decorating for my kids’ birthdays—overkill is kind of my thing! After years of using yard signs for our own celebrations and realizing I was finally in a position to start a business of my own, it all clicked. I wanted to create the same feeling we experienced that day—the joy, the surprise, and the love.
